One Hit Wonder Or Perennial Favorite?
By Clive on Jun 27, 2009 with Comments 0
The world is fickle, we can’t even remember our favorite ‘one hit wonder’ can we? But we have no problem reciting lyrics from our favorite Beatles tracks. Another bad analogy from SEOptimum!
Sure, being ‘flavor of the month’ might be cool – for a month – but what then? The fast hit, quick results of the SEO Black/Grey hats simply don’t work long term. In many cases even THEY don’t expect them to – they are into a ‘Wam, Bam‘ fast hit, in and out tactic. Is that what you want for your business or brand? I’d suggest not.
The fact is that it IS possible to get a link to your site, in a second hand way, for your keyword of choice. In fact, if you are very good at Web 2.0 marketing you can actually have multiple references to your site on Google and elsewhere.
I think my record was ‘owning’ 9 of the 10 rankings on Google’s page #1 and another 7 out of the 10 on page #2 for a specific keyword phrase. That was about 3 years ago. I’ve just been back and had a look and I’m at #20 and #30 ( bottom of page 2 and 3 respectively) but that’s OK as I’m not concerned about ranking for that phrase anymore.
But it does show how a keyword phrase ‘degrades’ over time if you don’t nurture it!
I tend to use Web 2.0 marketing techniques these days to re-enforce existing sites rather than get them ranked as stand alone pages in their own right. Although there can still be a place for that in good SEM from time to time.
